National CEU

The National CEU Community is dedicated to providing a multidisciplinary platform for educators to connect and learn from each other. We strongly believe that the knowledge and contributions from general educators, special educators, school psychologists, speech-language pathologists, school administrators, other school personnel, and university professors all provide specialty knowledge to the “education whole”. National CEU’s goal is to coalesce our educational knowledge to expand our own professional development but to also to better map our educational resources to efficiently and effectively serve our diversified student population.

We encourage our members to engage in thoughtful and professional dialogue, share resources, and use this medium to support all of our efforts to improve the education for all children.

Hello Franklin W. Bender, CCC-SLP,

Thank you so much for your website. I am looking forward to exploring it more. My name is Marianne Szijj and I am a Speech-Language Pathologist for Ventura Unified in California. My colleague and I are conducting an informal network with psychologists and SLPs from our county on evaluating culturally diverse students, particularly ELL students. We plan to have the psychologists and SLPs practice doing some of the investigative work necessary to do a thorough evaluation by looking through mock educational files for pre-referral information along with reviewing reports. I was in the process of developing a checklist for them to complete while looking at the files and reports, when I found your check list, "Checklist of Data to be Considered when Evaluating ELL for SPED Services," included as part of your fabulous presentation, "The Continuum of Evaluating and Serving ELL Students for SPED services" on the Internet.

I think your entire presentation is brilliant. I have attended a few similar presentations: Dr. Samuel Ortiz, and Catherine Crowley, JD. This network is actually a follow-up to a presentation by Catherine Crowley JD, to give our specialists an opportunity to practice the 'detective work' she discusses.

The handouts in your presentation are really exceptional. I would like to ask your permission to utilize your 'Checklist of Data to be Considered when Evaluating an ELL for SPED' to help the participants in our workshop review the mock cumulative files and reports. I also would like to provide your information on appropriate use of interpreters, and possible indicators of LLD (excerpts from Rosberry-McKibbin 2002) and warning signs of LD (excerpts from Bergert, 2000) handouts. I would of course, credit you and the National CEU. I would also encourage the professionals to become members of your website and provide the flier attached to your online presentation, "Streamlined Learning" that they can use to video streamed Continuing Education.
