Seminar Description
This seminar reviews validity and reliability using very clear examples. With those concepts firmly in place, participants apply them to current assessment materials, especially standardized tests, increasing a clinical evaluator’s ability to determine the accuracy and quality of information collected during the assessment process.

Learning Outcomes
Identify three ways that validity and reliability affect the accuracy of their assessment materials.
Identify how the four parameters of sociolinguistic interactions impact the validity and reliability of assessment materials.
Define confidence intervals and understand their applicability to current assessment materials.
Discuss the difference between sensitivity and specificity and how these concepts apply to current assessment materials.

Catherine J. Crowley, CCC-SLP, JD, is a Distinguished Lecturer in the graduate program in speech-language pathology at Teachers College Columbia University. She teaches Child Language Disorders, Assessment and Evaluation, and Communication Disorders in Bilingual/Bilcultural Children, and coordinates the bilingual/bicultural emphasis track n the masters program in speech-language pathology. Also at Columbia, she directs the Bilingual Extension Institute, which was the first program in the state designed to train bilingual speech-language pathologists. Ms. Crowley is also an attorney and has worked at the local, state and federal level developing guidelines, laws, and regulations consistent with preferred assessment practices. In December 2003, Ms. Crowley completed her term on ASHA's Multicultural Issues Board and is currently on the ASHA Government Relations and Policy Planning Board. She is a member of the New York State Board for Speech Pathology and Audiology. She has received several awards for her teaching including the 2004 “Outstanding Teacher Award” from Teachers College, Columbia University. In 2000, she received the ASHA Foundation's Van Hattum award for outstanding service to children and professionals in the schools. |
