Seminar Description

This seminar covers the definition, symptomology, and behaviors consistent with Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) Management including compensatory strategies, and environmental modifications. Includes current approaches to treating APD from deficit-specific techniques to computer programs addressing auditory attention and phonological processing.

Participants Will

Identify behaviors and symptoms that place a child at risk for having an auditory processing disorder

Describe management strategies in the classroom to enhance the auditory signal

List suggestions for the student to become a better listener

Describe several techniques to improve auditory processing disorders, including efficacy and appropriateness of treatment protocols

Identify a variety of computer software programs for children with auditory processing disorders and select an appropriate one for a given child’s area of deficit

Continuing Education Credit and Certificate of Attendance

All participants that successfully complete this module will receive a certificate of attendance (2 clock hours). Authorization from your individual school district or organization prior to enrollment is recommended.

About The Presenter(s)

Dr. Donna Geffner CCC-Sp/A
Dr. Donna Geffner, CCC-Sp/A has been the Director of the Speech and Hearing Center at St. John's University since 1976 when she initiated and developed both the Center and Undergraduate Speech and Hearing program. Dr. Geffner conceived, wrote, and developed a masters degree program at St. John's University in speech language pathology and audiology, which she now directs. Dr. Geffner has served on the New York State Licensure Board in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and as President of the New York State Speech-Language and Hearing Association. She was elected for 4 terms (17 years) as the New York Legislative Counselor to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, to which she was also named Fellow. She has served as President of ASHA. The American Guidance Service has recently appointed her to its Advisory Board and she serves on the National Committee on Speaking, Listening, and Media Literacy Standards for the College Board.
